It's ATL vs. Weight Watchers

So for those who don't know, I'm looking to shed a few pounds.... about 10, not that much. Since I'm not much of an exerciser, I decided to try something new. It's not a diet, but instead a change in lifestyle. Basically, it includes not going back for seconds, practicing portion control and incorporating healthier options. I'm doing okay so far, but at this moment it's kind of hard to gauge how successful it'll be. One thing that I can confirm is that I was very unsuccessful this past weekend. I went to Georgia over the weekend to visit friends and ate things that I really had no business eating, but damn it they were so good.

Two of the restaurants I visited over the weekend were just really good, so I thought it would be nice to let others know about them. If you're ever in Atlanta, GA (or a surrounding city) you have to check out these two places:

  1. http://www.flyingbiscuit.com/

  2. http://www.therealchowbaby.com/

1) A few friends and I met up on Sunday at The Flying Biscuit in the Midtown area for brunch. Although this wasn't my first time at the restaurant it was my first time at this location. When I visited ATL in 2007 I visited another one of their locations. The long wait and a few of the staff members were rather displeasing. However, the food and the prices were definite pros. I ordered the Egg-Stravaganza breakfast which included 2 eggs, 2 strips of turkey bacon, 1 chicken sausage patty, a thick piece of french toast with raspberry sauce, a delicious biscuit served with a sweet apple butter on the side, and oven roasted potatoes well seasoned.

Given how satisfied I was with my meal, I must say that I'm very happy we did not leave after finding out how long the wait would be. For $8.99 I had a delicious and very filling meal. Check it out sometime if you can!

2) On Friday night a few of my other friends and I met up at Chow Baby over on Howell Mill Road. It was my first time there and although a small part of me was a bit intimidated, I still wanted to try it. This isn't an ordinary restaurant in which you order your entree from the menu. At this place you pretty much prepare your own meal. When my friends first told me this, I was turned off. I thought to myself, if I'm going out to eat then I want my meal to be prepared for me from start to end. I don't want to make my own food...how dare they...lazy bastards. However, being the open minded person that I am I decided to give it a try anyway. I must say the concept is really cool and since I'm a good cook, I was able to prepare a meal (actually two) that tasted really good. Oh yeah that's right....it's a buffet so you can go up for seconds, thirds and more!

So in a nutshell, here's how it works. You walk in, get seated and you're given a menu which you can use to order appetizers and drinks from. You're also given a little stick with your table # on it and you write your name on it. Then you get on the buffet line and grab a bowl. You can add a rice option or noodle option (or some combination) to your bowl. Then you add some veggies (baby corn, peppers, mushrooms, bean sprouts, broccoli and etc). Then you add your sauce to the bowl (teriyaki, soy sauce, curry, plum sauce and etc). The next thing you do is grab a smaller bowl and in it you put your choice of protein(s) (beef, chicken, mahi mahi and etc). The last thing you add are your seasonings (paprika, Chinese 5 spice, sesame seeds and etc). At last you are done and you leave your bowls on the counter with your stick in it. You go back to your table and wait as your stir fry is prepared and then brought over to your table. The food is prepared rather quickly.

If you're a chef or at least a good cook then this concept works pretty well and you'll probably be delighted with your creation. However, if you're the kind of person who can't cook to save your life then this may not yield the best results for you. You may end up adding too many spices, combining the wrong flavors and creating something that even your dog wouldn't eat. If this happens to be you, DO NOT FEAR because like I said earlier it's a buffet, which means you can start all over again. If I'm ever in town again, I'll definitely go back there! Dinner is $11.99 and Lunch is $8.99.
